Internet Use

Carnegie Public Library Internet Use Policy

Introduction

Access to the Internet via the Ohio Public Information Network (OPLIN) is offered within the context of the Carnegie Public Library's mission to provide educational and information resources to the community of Fayette County.
The Internet may contain material of a controversial nature. The Library cannot be held responsible for the content or accuracy of the information accessed through the Internet. Restriction of a child's access to the Internet is the responsibility of the parent/legal guardian.

User Guidelines & Information
  • Use is limited to one-hour time slots. You may reserve the Internet computers 24 hours (1 day) in advance. Reserved time slots will only be held 5 minutes.

  • You may not use your own software programs on the library computers.

  • Internet access is normally available, subject to periodic maintenance, during library hours.

  • The Internet computers will be used for education, information and recreation purposes only. Unacceptable uses include but are not limited to: sending, receiving or displaying text or graphics which may reasonably be construed as obscene as defined in ORC 2907.01 (F) and applicable case law; children under the age of 18 may not display text or graphics which may be harmful to juveniles as defined in ORC 2907.01 (E) and applicable case law; viewing or printing pornographic material; copying commercial software in violation of copyright law; using the Internet for financial gain or any commercial or illegal activity; tampering with security mechanisms so as to disrupt or damage system performance.

  • You may not always be able to go to the places on the Internet you want to visit because there are too many visitors using the host computer, the database is limited to particular users, the host computer address has changed or closed, or the Library's Internet connection is temporarily unavailable due to technical difficulties.

  • The Library reserves the right to monitor information accessed through the Internet. Misuse of Internet access will result in loss of privileges for thirty days. Continued misuse could result in the permanent loss of privileges.

  • Library staff can help with basic Internet use as time allows. For in-depth Internet training or use of hardware/software, staff will make referrals to other community resources such as Southern State or Great Oaks.
